How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters? Part II

Man cleaning the gutter

To clean your gutters is a dirty task, but someone has to do it. Gutters need to be kept clean, that’s it! So, it’s essential to keep them free of any debris. This is the second part of this very important, and many times overlooked, subject.

Dry leaves, bird’s nests, tree branches and other materials will accumulate on your roof, and their favorite place is your gutters. The funny thing (not so funny when you have to clean) is that you won’t notice the issue until your gutters start overflowing during the first significant rain of the season. Or even worse, you won’t notice at all.

But don’t worry. Bay 101 Roofing’s mission is to help your roof when it needs attention, so today we’ll answer some routine questions that many Bay Area homeowners have when it comes to gutters.

In our previous post, you discovered what happens if you don’t clean your gutters and how you can spot damage caused by unclean gutters.

Keep reading, and you’ll find out what other homeowners ask us.

How often should you clean your gutters?

It depends. Some roofing experts recommend cleaning the gutters at least twice a year. The best time to do it is in the late spring and early fall. However, there are a few factors that you should consider:

  • Do you have pine trees around your house? If so, inspect the gutters every three months. Pine trees shed lots of needles year round.
  • Also be careful with ice. Make sure your gutters are clean during the winter because roof damage caused by ice is a real headache.

Do you need to replace your gutters at all?

Perhaps, but it also depends on the type of gutters you have installed. Assuming they’re installed correctly, and that you’ve been performing regular roofing maintenance, your gutters should be functional at least 20 years.

The durability of your gutters also depends on the materials they are made of. For example, metal gutters last around 20 years. On the contrary, plastic or vinyl gutters may be cheaper, but they need to be replaced sooner than that.

Neglecting periodical roofing maintenance or not installing your gutters properly shortens their lifespan by a lot.

But, if you are a responsible homeowner, don’t wait and get a roofing inspection from an expert roofer on time.

How do you clean your gutters?

Cleaning out your gutters is not that complicated. It can be messy, but it’s not rocket science.

Cleaning the gutters by hand is the most effective technique. However, a high-pressure hose will help you clear out clogs in all the downspouts.

Want to make the job easier and more efficient? Check the following tips:

  • Wear gloves and eye protection while doing the job.
  • Dilute bleach and water in a spray bottle and clean the mold with that.
  • Use a high-quality sealant to cure and seal any leaks you find.
